Homeowner’s insurance in California isn’t cheap right now, and if you own in San Pedro, the South Bay, or Long Beach, you’ve probably felt it. Between wildfire risk in the hills, coastal exposure, and a tight insurance market statewide, premiums have climbed. The good news: there are real ways to bring your rate down without leaving yourself exposed.
Smart Ways to Lower Your Premium
- Raise your deductible. Going from a $500 to a $1,000, $2,500 deductible can meaningfully lower your premium, just keep that amount in your emergency fund.
- Bundle home and auto. Most carriers give a solid multi-policy discount. In our market that can be one of the biggest single savings.
- Harden your home, and prove it. This matters a lot in Southern California. Fire-resistant roofing, ember-resistant vents, defensible space (big near the Palos Verdes hills), a monitored alarm, water-leak sensors, and updated electrical/plumbing can all earn discounts. Document the upgrades and send them to your insurer.
- Ask about every discount. New roof, security system, non-smoker, loyalty, paperless, senior, carriers rarely volunteer these. Ask directly.
- Shop it every year or two. Loyalty doesn’t always pay. Re-quoting with an independent agent who knows the coastal market can surface a better rate.
Don’t Cut the Wrong Corners
Lowering your premium is smart; underinsuring is not. Remember that a standard policy in California doesn’t cover earthquakes (that’s a separate CEA policy), and homes near the harbor or the LA River may need flood coverage. Make sure your dwelling coverage still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild here, construction costs in the South Bay aren’t what they were a few years ago.
