We all love our first home, but eventually, there comes a time when we start to wonder—should we stay or should we go? Life in Los Angeles moves fast, and so do our needs and wants in a home.
But moving up in LA isn’t as simple as just picking a new place. With one home to sell (or rent out) and another to buy, the stakes are higher. You’ve got more to think about, plan, and “get right” than when you bought your first home.
That’s why I created my 5-part weekly series, a no-BS guide to moving up to your next home with as little stress as possible. Whether it’s your first time upgrading or you’ve done this before, this series is your go-to resource.
First up: Should you stay or should you go?

The Clash said it best in their hit song, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”—and if you’ve been in your home for a while, you might be feeling the same way. But how do you know if it’s time to make the move?
- Your once-cozy home now feels cramped.
- Your hip neighborhood now feels noisy.
- Your job (and that brutal LA commute) has changed.
- Your oldest kid starts school next year.
- Your youngest just graduated from college.
We change. Life changes. And so do our housing needs.
Moving is a huge decision—both financially and personally—so before you start scrolling Redfin at midnight, let’s break down what to consider:
💰 Your $$$ Situation

✅ Equity Check: If you’ve owned your home for five or more years, you likely have serious equity. That’s money you can put toward your next home.
✅ Financial Outlook: Your job is stable, your income is up, and you’re feeling good about your long-term finances. That means:
- You’ll qualify for a mortgage.
- You can afford higher payments.
- You can buy a home that actually fits your needs.
✅ The Market: In LA, timing is everything. If homes are selling quickly (and at strong prices), it might be the perfect moment to cash in. But if the market is slow, you might want to wait it out or consider renting out your current home instead.
📍 Your Lifestyle & Location

LA is all about location, location, location. What was perfect for you a few years ago might not be anymore.
🚗 Commute Got Worse? Maybe that “quick drive” has turned into an hour in traffic. If you’re spending more time on the 405 than at home, it’s time to reconsider.
🏫 School District Matters Now? If your little one is about to start school, suddenly that great party scene isn’t as appealing as a top-rated school district.
🏙️ Neighborhood Vibe Shifted? Your once-quiet street now has way too much foot traffic (or not enough!). Maybe you’re craving a stronger sense of community or a more walkable area.
🏡 Your Home Itself

🔨 Can’t—or Won’t—Remodel? You love watching HGTV, but the idea of actually living through a remodel? No thanks. If your space is too small or too outdated, a move might be the better (and less stressful) option.
📦 Space Issues: Need more room for your growing family? Or realizing you don’t need four bedrooms anymore? Downsizing (or upsizing) can make a world of difference.
🌿 Yard Envy? Dreaming of a bigger backyard—or realizing you hate maintaining one? If your outdoor space doesn’t match your lifestyle, it might be time for a change.
🔄 Life Changes You. Your Home Should Change Too.
Where you live affects your life. And as your life changes, your home should too.
- Maybe that trendy loft was perfect when you were single, but now you want space for a family.
- Maybe you weren’t ready for a single-family home before, but now you’re tired of dealing with HOA rules and shared walls.
- Maybe retirement is on the horizon, and you’re thinking about something lower-maintenance.
You don’t have to rush into anything, but thinking ahead is key—especially in a market like LA, where timing can make or break your next move.
